A criminal record shouldn’t be a life sentence

One in three Americans has a criminal record, restricting their ability to get housing, education, and a job. A week before NY State Legislators voted on a bill that would seal criminal records and help millions, we unveiled a powerful mural hand-painted by formerly incarcerated activist Zaki Smith. It leveraged a medium typically used by inmates—hash marks. But, instead of simply representing time suffered in prison, we recontextualized the marks to illustrate the injustice suffered after release, literally illustrating the unjust system of perpetual punishment.
